To check the type of soil you have in your garden, just pick up a small amount of soil and rub it between your fingers.

CLAY: Soil forms a ball that can hold its shape when moulded. It has a shiny surface when smoothed.

SANDY: This will feel gritty and will not stick together to form a ball.

CHALKY: Alkaline, pale in colour & stony, usually has signs of flint or chalk, sometimes sticky.

ACID/ALKALINE: For the best result either see what plants you have already got growing in your garden or use a soil test kit.
